Beautiful nature, high mountains and charming villages - this is only a fraction of what you can see in Liptov. Lovers of active leisure, history and relaxation will find their own way here.
If you are going to Liptov, definitely do not forget to visit the picturesque village of Vlkolínec, registered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The village consists of colorful houses in which farmers, woodcutters and shepherds once lived. In the center of the settlement stands a well-preserved two-story belfry, built in 1770, near it is a log well.
The function of a museum is performed by a peasant's house, where you can learn something about the life of the original inhabitants. While walking through the village, you can admire the beautiful surrounding nature, and a bicycle path also leads here.
Liptovská Mara is probably the most famous water reservoir in Slovakia and at the same time it is one of the largest.
During its construction, up to 12 Slovak villages were flooded, of which only the iconic Gothic church by its shore has survived. Liptovská Mara is an excellent place to cool off in the summer and enjoy water sports.
In addition, you can take a sightseeing cruise by boat that starts in the village of Liptovský Trnovec .
Not far from Liptovská Mary is the archeoskanzen Havránok, which documents the life of the Celts in our territory.
Here you will find ancient dwellings, a farm house, a well, a potter's house with a kiln for firing, or a cult place. The open-air museum is located on a gentle hill, but the walk is not difficult.
You can get here from Tvarožná or Bobrovník by following the red tourist sign.
About 10 kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš is the northern part of the Demänovská ice cave complex.
During the tour, you will be enchanted by the rich cave flora and incredible rock formations. Ice columns are iconic, but they have almost disappeared due to climate change. You can park in the parking lot under the cave near the Jasná ski resort. A serpentine path leads to the cave, while the ascent to the entrance takes approximately 20 minutes.
If you are interested in how our ancestors lived in Liptov during the 19th and 20th centuries, be sure to visit the museum of the Liptov village of Pribylina .
The picturesque renovated open-air museum will draw you into the life of a small town with privileges and bring you closer to the life of the landless and wealthy yeomen. You can admire several well-preserved buildings, among them the manor house and the church from the flooded Liptovska Mary.
Prosiecka and Kvačianska dolina are one of the most beautiful valleys in Slovakia.
A tourist route enriched with ladders and footbridges leading over the stream that created them will take you through both. The Prosiecka valley starts behind the village of Prosiek and is 3.5 kilometers long.
Behind it is a smaller Svorad meadow, through which the road leads to the village of Veľké Borové, where you can have refreshments. The trail continues directly from the village to the Kvačianská valley, where the Oblazy mills, the rock formation Jánošíkova hlava and the wonderful views of Veľký and Malý Roháč deserve your admiration.
The valley ends at the village of Kvačany, from where you can get back to the village of Prosiek in about an hour. The entire circuit is approximately 20 kilometers long.
Watermills in the area called Oblazy are deservedly among the important cultural monuments in Liptov .
They are located on the tourist route through the Kvačianska valley and here you can admire two reconstructed mills - upper, Gejdošovský and lower Brunčiakovský. There used to be as many as four in this area, but one was washed away by water and the other, together with the pub, was set on fire by fascists in 1944.
You can also explore the preserved mountain water mills from the inside, where you will learn something about their past.
